麵包合唱團( Bread )   重溫舊夢

BREAD是活躍於70年代的一支美國樂隊，唱一些簡單乾淨的抒情歌曲。那些歌就像他們的名字一樣，樸實家常。

粗條花紋的緊身襯衣，長長的鬢角，喇叭口的牛仔褲，是他們的裝束，也是那個時代的標記。他們的聲音出奇的溫柔暖和，像是冬天坐在壁爐旁的地毯上的感覺。吉它是他們音樂的靈魂，就這麼輕柔地撥動著，讓人安靜而又感動。他們沒有什麼可供炫耀的輝煌戰績，這讓我們在聽的時候沒什麼負擔，我們不用仰視，也不用揣摩所謂的音樂理性，但可以自然而然地投入。

  麵包合唱團 Bread

Bread樂團成立於1968年, 是60年代末期至70年代中期的超級樂團,

該團除了幾首暢銷的抒情金曲外, 他們風格較硬的流行搖滾也不容忽視.

Bread兩位靈魂人物David Gates和James Griffin於1960年代初期就到加州

投身於音樂幕後工作, 累積經驗後決定自組樂團, 少一些電子樂器, 多一些

原音(Acoustic)旋律, 他們號召另一位樂手Robb Royer共創大業. 不久後,

Elektra唱片公司便與他們簽約, Elektra是加州搖滾的重要廠牌, 所以

Bread算是該公司第一個流行音樂樂團.

1969年他們發行第一張專輯(同名專輯), 整張專輯活潑而多變, 不過銷售量

方面卻有點糗. 就其原因, 可能是沒有建立自己的風格所致. David Gates

決定把樂團風味作的更柔情一點, 他寫下了該團第二張專輯的主打曲

Make It with You, 是1970年的超級冠軍歌曲, 也替Bread打下一片江山.

該團所出版的專輯一共6張(不包括精選輯), 分別為:

Manna (1971年)

Baby I'm-a Want You (1972年)

Guitar Man (1972年)

Lost Without Your Love (1977年)

 

從1972年至1977年這五年的時間, 他們為何沒出專輯?

這是因為團中兩位靈魂人物對於音樂的風格出現極大的紛歧, Gates認為,

他們應該朝抒情歌曲的方向好好發展; 而Griffin則認為, 既然是搖滾樂團

, 團員又全是男生, 理當應把樂風加重搖滾的元素. 這種意見無法整合的

情況, 讓Bread的運作暫時停擺. 另一個原因是, 當時連年的專輯灌錄和

大量的演唱, 讓團員在體力和創意上都已耗弱, 所以1972年後, Bread幾乎

處於休息狀態.直到1977年, 他們再度復合, 專輯Lost Without Your Love和同名單曲都有不錯的成績. 不過這次的重聚並沒找回太多的向心力, 所以同年Bread就正式宣布解散.

 

解散後, Griffin和Rob Royer在鄉村搖滾音樂頗有斬獲. Gates則在1978年

為經典電影'再見女郎'寫了同名主題曲, 也為個人生涯多添一筆記錄. 進入

80年代後, 逐漸淡出歌壇, 享受豐厚的版稅, 隱居在農場陪小孩一起成長.

而Griffin不幸罹患癌症, 於今年一月病逝於家鄉田納西, 享年62歲.

1996年Bread的精選輯Essentials, 網羅他們所有的代表作, 絕對是一張

能夠從頭聽到尾的經典專輯.
